Well...two issues that I see...first goldfish get really big and should be in a larger than 30g tank and certainly should not be kept in a 20g section of a 30g tank. Fancy GF need 10g each and comets or "regular" goldfish need more like 20g each. They are also very dirty fish so they need really good filtration.

Second issue, GF are coldwater fish, not tropical. So if you are keeping them properly, most commonly available fish wouldn't work with them simply because the water would be too cold. You would have to look for other coldwater fish and at least where I live, there are none in the store. Just a variety of other GF that are kept in tropical conditions. GF do best in water that is 68-72 degrees.

Nubster is correct. For 6 goldies you are looking at a 75+ gal tank for them. The smallest size recommended is 2 goldfish in a 30 gal. A good beginner's goldfish stocking rule is 20 gal for the first fancy goldfish and then an additional 10 gal for every other fancy. Commons will need more room and are truly better suited for a pond rather than a tank.

If you want a bunch of fish in one tank, goldfish are not the way to go. I think in your case it might be best to return the goldfish and get another species of fish. Mollys and platys are small enough to fit in your tank and come in similar colors to goldfish.

If you get rid of your goldfish, Golden Barb or Rosy Barb, would be nice since they look similar to goldfish and preper cool water. White Cloud Minnow would also work. You can click the shaded names and check out the profile. Zebra Danio/ Glo fish are also active fish that preper cooler temps.

55 gallon planted tank, starting over!!!( looking crappy, needs a major rescape)

Well, from my experience, I have kept my 3 goldfish for last 2 years at temperatures between 74 to 78, sometimes even hotter in really hot summer days, with tropical fish, and I have had no issues with anything. My gold fish are as colourfull as ever and so are my platy. I kept gold fish when I was in India. There the water temperatures never got colder than 75 deg even in winter. I used to have 2 fantail goldfish with 2 red wagtail platy in a 10 gal, and I got a 3rd fantail from my friend few months back. Now the goldies have outgrown my 10 gal and I plan to move them to a 20 gal.
I want to keep the water at the same temperature. I am looking for fish who will not nip at their fins. Any suggestions? I dont want to restrict myself to cold water fish. I really love the german blue ram! But all fish compatibility sites say that goldfish are not compatible with other tropical fish! Even though I have kept mine with others always. Can anyone help me with information regarding compatibility with the GBR (other than temperature)

Those goldfish are already stunted from living in a 10 gal that long. Young goldfish grow fast and should never be kept in a tank that size for that long. Don't bother upgrading to a 20 gal as they will just outgrow it, too. They should be put in a 55+ gal tank. Goldfish get 6 inches or larger and are very messy. It's recommended you have 20 gal for the first goldfish and an additional 10 for every other goldfish.

As for tank mate, provided they don't need constant temps over 80F, like hard alkaline water, and can't fit in a goldfish's mouth, you can try it with goldfish. You also have to make sure the fish aren't fin-nippers. German Blue ram will not work as they like soft water. The reason goldfish aren't recommended with other fish is their high waste production can make it VERY difficult to keep the nitrates below 20ppm which can be deadly to some tropicals.

I'm sorry, but that sounds like a good idea. I know some of the livebearers come in similar colors. Honey gourami also come in a golden variety. I've seen some golden colored betta.

A planted tank.of.rosy barbs is nice. These are quite easy to breed too.
