Getting ready to move

I am getting ready to move from VA to AZ and am looking for ideas or proven ways to transport my fish as well as my tank without having something apocolyptic happening in my car. I would also like to know if there is anyone who knows the general water quality in southern AZ so I can plan ahead in what chemicals I will need to restart my aquarium when I arrive. Any info would help. Thanks

I've moved plenty of times with my fish. Not as far as you plan to, but still I'll try to help.

First, get an igloo water chest that has a nozzle on the bottom to empty the melted ice water. This way, water change on the move is really easy. Matters how many fish you have, you may need two or more. The water chests can fit hang on the back filters and when possible, like staying at a motel, get the filtration going.

Do your best to keep your gravel, filter media and as many decorations as possible wet during the trip. With some luck, this will keep your biological filter intact during the move and reduce the odds of having to go through another cycle when you set the tanks back up. Those big 5 gallon buckets sold at Home Depot would be perfect.

Hi there,
I live in AZ and have to tell you that we are really hard water. I do not know much about transporting fish, but have been told that you can purchase small portable filters that help keep the water full of air over the trip. If you call the manager at Tropical Treasures in Chandler (480) 782-8300 he knows his stuff and can advise you. I don't know if you are moving to phoenix, but they are specialists and even help people move tanks.
