Getting an aquarium soon, just have a couple of cycling ??'s

I've had aquariums on and off for many years, but didn't know much about cycling all that time. By some miracle most of my poor fish survived.

Other than a betta in a small aquarium (and a small pond with fish), I haven't had an aquarium in five years. I miss it, so I'm planning to get a small aquarium in the next few weeks. I found a 14 gallon glass aquarium kit at Wal-Mart that I think I will buy.

Now, this time around I want to try to cycle properly. I have read and read the tips on cycling, and my blonde brain is spinning. LOL I am leaning towards getting 3 zebra danios to start cycling with. I gather they can be added 24 hours after setting up the aquarium?

I am wondering, would adding the filter from my betta tank into the new tank speed up the cycling process?

And in addition to adding a water conditioner, should I add "stress zyme" ?

How often should I test the water the first few weeks?

I'm sure I will have other questions when the time comes, but this will help me in deciding what I need to purchase right away. Thank you!

Hello mommytown and welcome to the forum,

To start cycling your aquarium with fish, zebra danios are one of the best choices. You will need to get test kits for Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate and pH. I would recommend the APH master test kit for this - test strips are not reliable.

Once you have added the danios to the tank they will begin to produce waste = ammonia. Therefore, it is necessary that you start testing your water parameters daily from the beginning.

Adding a mature filter, or any media from an established aquarium will speed up the cycle process. :)
