If you can, go with a larger tank. 20 at least but 30 would be even better. A larger tank is easier to maintian and you have less chance of a catastophic failure., Not to mention that you have so many more options.

Get a good filter, Aqua Clear is a good one as well as Emporer and Penguin and get it one size larger than you need for the tank. A good heater, 5 watts per gallon or one szie larger. And don't go with the fake epoxy LFS gravel. Go with smaller natural river rocks. It looks better and is easier to maintain and healthier for the fish.

If you have any other questions fire away. We are here to help.

You wouldnt need an air pump if you have a filter thats for a tank twice the size as whatever you have. An example, if you have a 30 gallon tank, get a filter for tanks up to 60 gallons. The air pump would just help oxygenate the water and keep it circulating but the filter should take care of that easily.

A bubble wand or airstone is only really needed if the fish are gasping for air. As for cycling, an airstone will help to speed up the cycle because the more air that is in the tank and the more agitation then faster the bacteria will multiply. I can't say it always works but I have seen some who swear it can cut cycle time in half.
