alot of things will leach into the water, which you dont want. i think quartz is alright but i would like another to confirm as im not 100% sure. i personally am a fan of a tank looking as nutural as possible. i would soak the rocks seperately in different containers and check the water in a few days. does it still appear clear? test the pH, has it changed? and so forth. a google search may also turn up helpful.

Ya I think quartz would be the best bet, I dont think it leeches anything out. I also like the natural look so thats why I wanted to put some cool/rare rocks or crystals in the tank because they are natural and I've never seen anything like that before. What really gave me the idea was that the volcano rock i bought for the tank had little crystals in it! i was like "hmmmmm"... so I just thought I would ask u guys if you've heard anything or seen anyhting like that. I also was googling around but their wasnt too much info on aquariums+minerals.

Quartz is just sand in a more organized crystal, so that should be aquarium safe. You might want to pour some boiling water over it just to be safe. Unless you're specifically trying to raise your hardness and pH, you want to avoid rocks with calcium in them. You also want to avoid rocks with metal in them and it's probably not a good idea to use rocks that are really porous as it could be difficult/impossible to make them aquarium safe.
