I have a small pond with goldfish, and I keep a floating de-icer on it during our northeastern winters. It provides a small round hole in the ice. The reason for this is because gases can become trapped under solid ice, which stresses and can kill your fish. The fish might live through the gases, but then again they might not----I prefer to be safe rather than sorry so I use the de-icer.
