Fluval 405 Media Change

Hey all. I have gone WAY too long with the original media in my Fluval 405 ( I clean it every 2 months but have never changed it) and need to change it all.

Is it true that I should not change all the media at the same time? If so, what should I change first and then how long should I wait and what should I change after that? Does it matter? (I have 2 new foam pads, new carbon, and new BioMax.)

THANKS.

55G fresh with 7 cichlids.

Water tests healthy and fish seem great but it is so dam cloudy all the time after always being crystal clear - even right after my weekly 50% water changes.

What do you currently have in each tray and at what levels?

I have the 305 which is the 3 tray level version of your canister filter and the bottom level has carbon, middle level has one carbon and one biomax and top level has all biomax. This was different at first as I ended up using the stock filter media. You could safely replace the pre-filter foam sponges and carbon all in one sitting. The biomax is what you should really change out in sessions. As I understand it you don't want to replace this stuff all at one time because the biomax contains all the great bacteria you need aside from what i in your physical aquarium. Each tray for the 305 has 2 compartments. How many compartments are filled with biomax? I would say replace one compartment at a time if you have more than one filled with biomax. If you dont have more than one compartment filled with biomax then I would start by adding more biomax before removing any.

You know, this would be easier if I just waited to hear back from you about what you have in each tray and specifically in each compartment. So I'll just shut up and wait for you to respond. Sorry, I ramble.. :)
