Yesterday I switched my 29 gal community over to black sand. I'm loving the look, but I just can't get it all to settle at the bottom. Some grains are floating at the surface, and some have attached themselves to bubbles that are held on the bottom by the weight of the sand. Because these grains are still floating around, I've turned off my HOB filter. I had it on last night, but then heard the awful noise of a few grains getting sucked up. In an attempt to preserve the filter, I turned it off. How can I make all of the sand settle down? Stirring up the bottom doesn't seem to help much.
You just have to give it a few days to settle as for what's floating on the top why not just skim it out? Also I don't think it will hurt the hob filter to just let it run and filter out what it can just keep a eye on the filters and clean them when they block up.
I've been using the net to skim it out, and having some luck with that. I'll try a cup and see hoe much more I can get out. Any way that I can get rid of those "sand bubbles" on the substrate?
The sand I'm using is Estes Ultra Reef. It was actually cheaper than Petco's sand. You just have to find a supplier in your area.
Fishguy2727 is a huge advocate of estes sand - perhaps he will know.
