Excuse me, I suddenly feel the need to hug a tree...I mean, I never really have before, but I'm sure I can find one that just needs a hug

Hi and welcome to TFK!

Trust me I did the exact same thing as you, I rushed in with little knowledge out of pure excitement, then a week in I found this site and thought, "this isn't good for me"! lol. Over time you just learn, with your cycling just be patient, and well done on getting plants too. They just spped things up and in my opinion there's no artificial plant that compares to a real one, they just don't have that feel of nature to them :)

Update: "Fish Virgin" More questions!

Hi all,

It is day 27 on my new 20gl tank. I did an 8 gallon water change last night....added some Seachem Prime. Nitrites (1.0) and ammonia(.25) are the same this morning. I also removed my ammonia bag from my filter? I read some posts on here that advised someone to remove the ammonia bag or tank will not cycle?????

I was feeling pretty defeated this morning...but I did notice that my Black Sailfin Molly is swimming with his topfin at "full mast"...he has not done that untill this morning. Is that a good sign?

Questions:

1. Exactly what should I have in my filter for "media"? Right now I have a sponge, carbon bag and biomax bag..these have been in my filter since Nov 20th. Should I remove/add/replace anything?

2. I added an Amazon sword plant 3 days ago. I plan on purchasing some water sprite after Christmas. I have a "stock" hood....do I need to purchase any type od specific lighting for my plants?

3. Stocking? If the fish Gods are shining and I make it through the cycling process without killing my 3 little fish...what would you guys suggest for future fish?

Thanx, for any and all advice! Kathy

I can't help you with lighting or the filter question but for a 20 gallon you can get two Bristlenose Pleco! I only have one guy because my tank is a 10 gallon, but he is an active character by himself and fun to watch, plus he cleans the inside walls, he even cleans the outside of the filter for me! hehe.

If you consider them, they love driftwood (it supposedly helps with their digestion from what I've heard) and any sort of Algae wafers they'll die for, plus things like bloodworm, veg, brine shrimp etc.

You can see my little guy (he's only 1 1/2" at the moment) in my avatar pic.

Filter media should be rinsed as needed to keep it unclogged so that the water continues to flow through it and not around it. The frequency can vary, but weekly during the partial water change will not hurt. You can rinse it in a pail of tank water; once you have the tank reasonably well planted this will not be critical (using tank water I mean).

The hood is fine but the tube is probably not, for plants. Assuming this is a T8 fluorescent tube fixture, you can get a "daylight" type tube (take the existing tube with you to ensure you get the correct length) in hardware stores; GE, Phillips and Sylvania make them, they have a kelvin rating of 6500K, this is what you look for. The T8 refers to the tube diameter, and is the normal fluorescent type.

A basic liquid fertilizer is also advisable. Seachem's Flourish Comprehensive Supplement is in my view the best.

This somewhat depends upon your water parameters. Do you know the hardness of your tap water (you can find this out from the water supply people), and the pH?
