He has had it for about a year as a saltwater tank.

I want it to be fresh water.

Is a sump a bad or good idea with freshwater?

Converting the tank to freshwater how should I go about getting rid of the salt? Would a thorough rinsing work?

A sump will filter the water better than anyhting else I can think of. Massive surface area, lots of options for media, and a large surface area. Can't beat it really.

As for gettng the salt out, run a lot of water through it. Should only take about 5 minutes of fast running water to get rid of most of it. If there is residue then use hotter water to dissolve it and a little elbow grease.
