fish ID help

newbie here. first post and new at fish keeping. I bought 2 red fish yesterday and i don't know what they are. i have looked at every fish i can google and cannot id it. it has a body shaped like a neon tetra, but about 2-3 times as long. it is red and has a very forked tail. the tail action is unique when it swims. i was told that they are males and the female is more of a brown dull color.

any ideas?

It is very unwise to buy a fish without knowing what it is, since you cannot possibly know what it needs, its behaviours, special foods, maximum size, etc. if you don't know the species. Did the store not have any common name? That and a photo will help us.

And, welcome to Tropical Fish Keeping forum.
