Fish eating snails???

Hello,

I am asking this on behalf of my BF's mom because I only have saltwater tanks and know pretty much nothing about fresh water...

She said that a ton of tiny snails appeared in her tank that she described having spiraled shells and the size of a pin. All but two of her fish died (the 2 that have been there the longest lived) and she thinks the snails might be the reason or eating them..Has anyone heard of this?

I asked her if she adding any new specimens lately that may have hosted something and she added two new fish, guppies I think. The new fish probably brought them right? But what could they be?

The snails sound like Malaysian trumpet snails. I doubt that the guppies brought them as they snails that usually stay in the substrate. Does she have live plants in the tank?

just so.

addressing the concerns, no the snails didn't eat or harm the fish in any way. most likely their sudden appearance was just a simple coincidence. this is actualy extreemly common though when fish die mysteriously and are found later covered with snails. tell your BF's mother that they are quite beneficial. kinda like nassarius in saltwater.

Pretty much like Cro they are a good thing in my opinion. My thinking on this is: That it is possible that when she add the guppies they had some kind of health problems that spread through out the tank killing the fish. In return that may have "fouled" the water causing the snails to come out of the substrate in attempts to escape maybe. This might be totally wrong as I am still learning myself but that makes sense to me. I don't see my MTS that much just a few here and there. So if she saw bunches of them esp. on the glass go up the tank that was probably case.

Thank you guys for responding so quick! That all makes perfect since to me as well, I have never heard of a snail eating eating fish in SW but like I said I don't know very much about freshwater so that is why I thought I would ask...

She doesn't have live plants and gravel rock bed...

Well since it doesn't seem that the snails were the cause of the deaths I suspect it was the new fish that brought a parasite in the tank and infected everyone. Thanks again for all your help
