I got in my water test kit today! In my pre-softened water, my KH is 12, and my GH is 16.

That is "fairly hard" water [I'm assuming you counted the drops at 16 for GH and each drop is 1 dGH. The next question is, how exactly does the softener "soften?" And what fish do you want [I believe some came with this tank?].

I assume the initial issue of fish gasping and dying has ended?
