Fire Eel and filter

Hello, I'm new to this forum, I have a quick and hopefully easy question. I have a 7 or 8 inch Fire Eel who has recently discovered the filter and is trying to get into it, I've read this is common for them, but I would rather not have this happen or rather have my fish go in that area because I have a cat with a history of making fish disappear. the tank is well covered except for where the filter is of course, and i want to discourage my Fire Eel from going near it.

So I was wondering if or what can be put in front of the area where the filter drops water in, and the cheapest material. like window screen or maybe some plastic thing or something. any suggestions? the filter part is around 6 inches wide or so, i think (i'm no good with eye-balling sizes). Just something to block it to make my eel realize it can't go in.

You can get panty-hose and put it over the intake and output areas of your filter, when I used to have shrimp in my tank this kept them from getting sucked into the filter.
