Fire eel eating barbs, new tankmate suggestions?

I think my fire eel might be silently snatching a barb at night every once in a while. I've never seen it eat the bloodworms I put right in front of it, and its mouth is definitely big enough to fit one in, and every once in a while I notice a small bulge in the eel that I used to think was just a whole swallowed cube of bloodworms... But today I noticed there was an unusually small number of barbs swimming around the front of the tank. I used to have 9 tiger barbs and glass barbs (each) but now I have 6 tiger barbs and 7 glass barbs, and there haven't been any dead barbs floating around. The barbs float in place at night when they "sleep", and would make very easy prey for the nocturnal eel.
So now I'm going to need new tankmates for the eel. Any suggestions?
This is for the 90 gallon tank.

RIP fire eel
why did you think it was a good idea to keep going over the top of the tank
when you realized you couldn't breathe outside water?

For future reference, assume a fish will eat anything that fits into it's mouth. Just try larger fish.

well, the eel grew. the barbs wouldn't fit in its mouth when I got the eel and I assumed the barbs were fast enough to swim away when the eel snapped at them.

Oscars should work. Basically, anything relatively peaceful and larger than it's mouth. (Read, larger than it's mouth will be when it's 2 feet long.)

Yeah, I get it, the eel will get bigger. I've learned my lesson with the barbs.
And my parents didn't like the oscars I had in the tank because they would grow up to be "ugly".
Still, I'll look around for any bigger fish I can get for the tank. In the meantime, if anyone has some specific suggestions, please let me know.

Also, redchigh, I just noticed your signature. I've got some java fern plantlets if you're interested.

pacus, ailverdollars, arrowanas, big catfish, big loaches, angelfish, and maybe some of the other large relatively peaceful cichlids like jack dempseys..

What kind of java fern? I'm really only looking for narrow leaf.
