I won't be making any changes on my filter then. As seen in the picture (though it might not be that clear), I have an emergency return, located just above the usual water line inside the bucket. This is for safety reasons in the event that the main return gets clogged, my pump won't run the pond dry, expecially if it occurs during the night when no one might notice. It also functions as the pressure equalizer.

Yes, I am currently in the nitrite spike phase, with my readings going from .25 ammonia, .25 nitrite to 0 ammonia and .5 nitrite.
