filter question/Whisper

I bought a used 43 gal aquarium, it came with a large Whisper 30-60 gal filter (double). Amazing condition, well cared for, but I see the cons of this that it does not have a bio/mechanical filter set up, like I have in my Aqua clear 30. Since I see no reason to use carbon, and don't want to buy the carbon filter inserts that go with this filter, here is my question:

Couldn't I just use the Whisper like a Aqua Clear, and put a sponge in it and the ceramic pieces in a mesh bag? I don't see why I couldn't do that. If someone knows different, can you please tell me?

Thanks.

Gwen

Of course!! Set it up the way you know to work! that is what I would do. I would be really surprised if someone said "no".
