Filter question? (sorry, i didn't see and equiepment thread)

Any ideas?

This weekend while doing my weekly water change I did the usual of unplugging my Penguin 100 bio-wheel filter. I never emptied it or let it go dry. I just look at it to make sure that all the tubes are free of debris and that there are no major obstructions. Every thing looked fine.

I then proceeded to clean my tank as usual. However when unplugged in the filter it would not start running again.

The impeller looked fine and there were no humming sounds as usual upon start up.

Is it possible to break one down and see if the motor is ok?

Any suggestions?

The filter is about 5 years old and I know it is about time to replace it. However in this economy if I donít need to purchase a new one I riley donít want to.

Are Marine land filters good? Or should I avoid them?
Any suggestions on a decent alternative?

I only have a standard 20 gallon aquarium.

Thanks for the help.

I have a couple filters the same as yours. Not a bad filter, but I have found the bio-wheels to quite turning if the filter media gets clogged with plant material. I added sponges in the filters, so I do not have to rely on the bio-wheels alone.

Did you clean the area out where the impeller sits? I have found mine to be very touchy if the impeller is not sitting just right. Maybe take it back apart and reassemble. A few times, I have got mine to start back up by raising and lowering the intake a little.

I don't know anything about fixing motors. For me, Marine Land is a trusted name, a lot of people also like the AquaClear filters.

What Twistersmom said. I had a bio-wheel 200 - sometimes it started back up just fine after priming it (filled to the top with water) other times, nothing at all.

Take the impeller out and clean the area it sits in with a q-tip or pipe cleaner as well as the impeller itself. Before you put it back on the tank plug it in for a second and see if the impeller spins. You should be good to go if the issue is gunk.

Good luck.

I've had a similar issue to this several times. It's not a big deal. As Romad said just pull the impeller, clean it and clean where it sits. Put everything back together, fill the pump with water and plug it in. Should work just fine for you.

Nope, no go.

I broke down and bought a new one. I picked up another Penguin 100 Bio-Wheel. Now I’m going to have to keep a close eye on my parameters.

I'll keep you all up-dated.

Did you keep the bio-wheel and media wet? If so, just place them in the new filter and you should be good to go.

No, unfortunately my wife threw them out before i told her not to.

Now I have to re-cycle my filter. The Bio-Filter was perfect.

That's ok, i do checks every day anyway.
