Filter Question

I have the Aqueon Quietflow 30 HOB filter on my 29 gallon aquarium. The only filter inserts available for this particular power filter are activated carbon, and I have a few plants in my aquarium.

How would one go about home-making inserts for the filter that will remove food particles and stuff? Suggested materials? I was thinking maybe a few layers of cheesecloth. Any thoughts?

What do you mean by activated carbon? Is it the type of filter pad that's like a fiber material infused with carbon, or is it the type that's has activated carbon pieces inside of the filter material? If it's the latter, you can just slice along the top edge of the cartridge and dump it out to save for when you need it (i.e. to remove medication). If it's the type that's got carbon bonded to it, you can just use it as-is. The carbon will become de-activated after a week or two and it will be as if it's not there. Carbon has to be replaced regularly to keep doing what it does.
