Aquaclear and Fluval have merged now, right? Or is that on just some of their product? Thats why I was saying Fluval/aquaclear. I am a huge Fluval fan.

May I assume you're using an airstone or equivalent for aeration? If so, run a small sponge filter instead. More area for bacteria and a good backup for a temperamental HOB.

Tropical Trav said they have a lot of plants and a filter that disturbs the surface..I don't think the aeration is an issue. Why would it be? I have bubblers in one tank out of my 10 and only because my daughter likes the lights and the loach thinks it a soothing massage and balances vertically in the bubbles. Other then that..why?

I don't understand your question. I was not addressing aeration; I was suggesting a way to increase filtration and to backup nitrifying bacteria capacity in case of a clogged filter in a heavilly-stocked setup.
