Filter Cartridges or Filter Media

Hey,

I was wondering what peoples opinions where on different filter media and switching from a cartridge to bagged media. I currently have an AquaTech 5-15 power filter. It uses cartridges that I need to switch out every 2 to 3 weeks. This is no issue. I have been told though that putting my own media in there will not only increase the surface area for beneficial bacteria to grow but it also will be cheaper in the long term. If this is so any tips on how to do this. I see you can purchase carbon and bio balls. what would i put this in and what else would be necessary.

Thank you for all your input,

David

I am very familiar with the AquaTech 5-15 (have two of them not currently in use).
You do not want carbon or bio balls. You can use and reuse the cartridges over and over, just giving them a rinse in tank or treated water until they nearly fall apart. Otherwise, you might use sponge material cut to fit or spun polyester filter floss instead of or in combination with the standard cartridge.

Father Knows Best but Abbey knows everything! I once knew everything, then I asked one question.
