Hello all,
I have a 75 Gallon Aquarium that I am setting up, I have had it for years but since Ive moved its been sitting empty. I have an AquaClear 500 filter and 2 Aquaclear 270gph powerheads for my under gravel filter from when I had gravel as my substrate. Id like to use sand this time around, so I dont think I am going to use the under gravel filter. Should I use an air pump setup with air stones? Can someone point me in the right direction? I will have live plants in there and most like American Cichlids. Where do I begin? Thanks.

Welcome to Fishforum.com, Awash.

What American cichlids are you referring? Angels, discus, rams and apistogrammas are a few indestructive cichlids. They shouldn't bother your plants.

It is up to you whether you want to use the airpump or not. As for cycling, a sticky thread by fish_4_all is available in this section. API liquid test kit is recommended for best results. You will want zero ammonia and nitrites if you wish to keep fish. Definitely buy fish only after the cycling phase.

Do you have the heaters, thermometer and lighting now?:) Posting more details will definitely help.

Good luck.:)
