Feeding live brine shrimp

Hey there,

I feed a variety of things, and when I feed live brine shrimp every single fish goes nuts over them (excepting the farlowella catfish). When I get a portion, it can last me a week. I'm used to giving a little something different every day, but do you think it's OK to give brine shrimp daily until they're gone? Or would this be a potential issue with constipation or the like? If so, I might just get a half portion next time I go.

Also, I refrigerate them as I read they last longer that way. Do you all do that? Any other live brine shrimp tips? I know I can potentially grow them but I'm not quite there yet.

Thanks.

I have read that a constant diet of brine shrimp is not good, and I think it had to do with too much roughage (the exoskeleton) and insufficient nutrition over time. If you keep the shrimp in salt water, it is better, since in fresh they quickly lose their nutritive value and usually die soon. Also, unless you are feeding the shrimp, the longer you have them the less nutritional value they carry, for obvious reasons.

You can find some good info here:

As with most of these live foods, consider them "treats" and ensure the fish are eating sufficient prepared foods to ensure adequate nutrition.

Something we all need to remember: The fish you've acquired was quite happy not being owned by you, minding its own business. If you’re going to take it under your wing then you’re responsible for it. Every aspect of its life is under your control, from water quality and temperature to swimming space. [Nathan Hill in PFK]

The ones I get are kept in salt water... but they only last so long. Maybe next time I'll just get a half-portion.

They're definitely something I just get from time to time. Most of the diet is a variety of flakes, pellets, wafers/discs and frozen.

I'll check out your link- thanks!
