Enough oxygen?

I have one air pump in my 55G freshwater pumping a two inch line of bubbles. How do I know if this is enough, or if this is really making a difference at all?

Well air in the tank is more about surface agitaiton than air under the water, yes you do get a small amount of oxygen in the water from the bubles but the fact they create waves which increases the surface area dramatically and breaks the surface tension is the real goal.

Is there a specific reason you have an airstone in the tank? I don't like to use them personally unless I think there is not enough air in the tank and the fish seem to lythergic or gasping at the surface.

I like the way bubbles look.

Any idea how long I will remain a "new member"? It's been almost a year, folks. Buzzkill.

I have two "ottos" algae eaters (just an inch long each) in my 10 gallon freshwater tank. I don't have an air pump or anything. Within the last day however, they have started dashing to the surface about every 10 minutes to take a gulp of air, then return to their algae eating.

They never did this before. Is this normal, or do I need some form of oxygen?

Well I took matters into my own hands and bought a "TopFin" Air Pump and a Round Air stone to go under the gravel.
