I was looking at the Eheim 2217, and thought it was a good idea, until I started reading a few reviews. Most said that the flow was extremely exaggerated and that, while it was a decent bio filter, it wasn't a good mechanical filter.
Anybody have any experience with this filter?
I use one of the Eheim 2217's on 80 gal planted tank and it would in my view work well for the 55 gallon.
I wished I had two on the 80 ga,l but plant's and fish are doing well thus far with the one .
It is excellent mechanical and biological filter.
You can skip the carbon pad that comes with the filter and just order a three pack of the mechanical sponges for this filter. (blue pads)
Flow through filter's does tend to be less than advertised once the flow is measured with all media in place but it is this way with all filter's.
Eheim 2217 would be fine for 55 gal in my view unless you are wanting crazy water circulation for alrge waste producing fishes.
I have approx 75 small tetra like fishes ,cory's,shrimp,in 80 gal along with lot's of plant's and the one Eheim 2217 as mentioned is performing well with monthly cleaning.
