hey guys could you help me!
i currently have 1 dwarf puffer in a 6gallon tank
nitrate 5
nitrite 0
ammonia 0.25?!
ive done a 50% water change and still can not get rid of it!
sand substrate!
could someone help the newbie! :)

Well, even though dwarfs are small, they still produce alot of waste. Many experts think they should be kept in a 30 gallon tank. I think they are ok in a 6g as long as the WC are kept up with.

I agree with Inrin, definately test the tap. My tap at home is 1.0ppm!

Make sure you are using a liquid test kit as well, since the strips are notoriously inaccurate.

Regarding their waste, I found dwarf puffers to be very low waste producers compared to other fish that I have kept. I had 5 in a 10 gallon and the weekly water changes hardly brought up any waste from the gravel, plus the parameters were always pristine. I'd definitely look at either your tap water or the test kit if they're strips as the culprit.
