hi
i can't help about the vortex thing,
carbon removes the tannis, you just need to remember to change it on a regular basis,
or remove it if you need to medicate the water.

when you set up a new tank, hide an extra
sponge or two behind some decor, that way you have
something seeded for you next filter.
