i found a nice peice of drift wood at my local lake is it safe for my fresh water cichlid tank should i wash or ???

General rule of thumb is to wash it down real well with a power washer. If you don't have one, you can take it to a local carwash. Make sure to use water only, not soapy water, etc. Then take it home and Boil it for awhile. The more crevices etc that it has the longer you will want to boil it, some boil for a couple hours. then I would let it soak ina bucket of water with a capfull of bleach for about 2 minutes, then soak it for several days in fresh water (no bleach), changing out the water every day until it stops turning brown from tanin.

I think that covers it, others may add or change based on their personal prefernace.

nice bit of wood.

when you set up a new tank,hide an extra
sponge or two behind some decor,that way you have
something seeded for you next filter.
