DIY sponge filter & tube size?

I am building a few DIY sponge filters. I bought 3/4" PVC pipe to put the airline/air stone into. However, the air stone fits in the very snuggly, with no space around it. I have seen it recommended to use 1" pipe (which leaves more room around the air stone). Is this a necessity? Do I need to use the 1" or can I get away with using the 3/4"? I wasn't sure if the open space around the air stone in a 1" pipe served a purpose or if the 3/4" would work as well.

Thank you for your help!

i'm not not mistaken you'll need the extra space or the bubles and anything else will get stuck in there
