Did I overstock my 29 gallon?

I set up a 29 gal in Feb. I have 0 nitrites, 0 ammonia, and 5 nitrates. I tested with the API freshwater test kit daily. Water change - 30% weekly.

So right now I have:

3 Albino Corydoras - Prob should get 1 more.
5 Cherry Barbs - boys
1 Platy
4 Danios - I know I need 1 more.
1 Dwarf Gourami

Am I severely overstocked here? Can I add 1 more Cory and 1 more Danio to complete my school?

I found a cool website when I started up my tank and I use it as a good estimation

AqAdvisor - Intelligent Freshwater Tropical Fish Aquarium Stocking Calculator and Aquarium Tank/Filter Advisor

I dont think you are overstocked at all (look at my list in my signature...THATs overstocked, lol...but I keep up with water changes and am running 2 filters one for a 30 gal and one for a 50 gal).

I would add 3 cories, 2 danios, and 1 more cherry barb. (all three of those species like groups of 6 or more for optimum health and happiness)...dont add all at once (cories one week, danios and barb the following)...adding that many will tip the scales, but with regular water changes and good filter all should be fine. If you are concerned, at least get each of the three schools to 5 at a bare minimum.

Aqadvisor is a good guide, but they dont comment too much on compatablity and dont offer fish profiles for details, but again, a great guide.

Welcome to TFK!!! Feel free to ask ANY questions, there are a lot of knowledgable people here to help.

If fish keeping is new to you, let me know, and I can provide some great links to articles here on TFK that detail cycling and stocking a tank.

Thanks - I am glad it's not overstocked. I will def. get my school #'s up. Would I be able to add possibly 1 more fish - I was kind of interested in the male guppies at my LFS. They are GORGEOUS! Nothing like the run of the mill ones you find the big box stores.

I'm new to fish keeping - but thankfully I did LOTS of reading. My tank is fully cycled - has been for about 4 weeks. Didn't think it would ever happen - seemed like it took forever for the spikes! I was so excited when the #'s went down! The numbers have remained stable, even as I added fish. Will I need to add a larger filter? Mine is a hang on the back one that does up to 40 gallons.

That filter is adequate. And for the record, I agree with increasing the numbers of the shoaling fish you have.

And welcome to Tropical Fish Keeping forum. You will indeed find lots of helpful aquarists here.

Byron.

Like Byron said, your filter is probably fine.

Guppies huh? I dont know, that might be pushing it. I always recommend guppies to be in a minimum of 3 as to thin out their bickering among one another. I also dont advise mixing sexes unless you have the extra tank space for fry. Then again, I dont think I would mix guppies with a gourami. Gourami like things calm, and well, guppies are not. Guppies are hyper shots of color that dart through tanks and in frenzies of circles with each other when they are happy and healthy. However, its a great excuse to get a 2nd tank, maybe just a 10 gal, you could have a nice group of 5 or 6 guppies in a 10 gal happily...or a 15 gal.

I share you guppie love. Every now and then you find some that just stand out at Petsmart, and then I must get them! My guppies started out as just 4 last year...now including the fry I got, I have 17. (only the males will stay in that tank...upgrading my other tank and will add the females to it or if my best friend's two newest tanks are cycled by then I will have her take the females. ) Anyways...I wish my quality lfs would stock guppies! It seems like all the aquarium and fish specialty stores dont stock guppies since all the big chains do, at least where I am at.

Your tank probably could handle 3 guppies bioload wise(I am talking about after you get the shoals' numbers up to 5 or 6 each), but I dont think compatability wise it would work. I think it would be awesome to get Byron's opinion on adding guppies to the current stock.
