Is this a decent sponge filter fix?

I somehow managed to break the "bullseye" piece on my sponge filter (the piece that the airline connects to). Could I drop in a small airstone down the hole in the filter to weigh the tube down?

Also my filter "lift tube" is a little tall for my tank, could I cut it in half or will it effect the functionality?

... or should I just cut my losses and buy a new smaller model.

(for an upcoming shrimp tank!)

yea just put an airstone on the end of the tube it will defuse water better and weigh it down, also cut the tube down so its below water level
