cycling tank with fish food

HI. I have been cycling our 30 gallon tank with fish food for about 2 weeks now (first time cycling like this). Ammonia is pretty high right now (almost 3 ppm). My question actually has nothing to do with levels.....I am fine waiting for it to cycle.

1.. My question has to do with all the food that is lying at the bottom. Maybe by the time it is officially cycled the food will have decomposed completely, but if not, do I just suckas much of it up as I can before putting the fish in so they don't overeat?

2. Also, in my 'cycling' tanks (there are two...I didn't have a clue about the cycling process when I set them up and put the fish in....so far, after 9 weeks all fish are still alive and well....I have been doing partial water changes and testing the water like crazy so I realize it is going to take forever to cycle, but I don't want the fish to suffer) the plastic plants are looking pretty scumy....do I take those out and scrub them or is there a better way to clean them, or do I not clean them because that would upset the cycle? The same with little scumy patches on the inside of the glass?

As you can tell I am new to this and could use any help offered. Thanks!

Susan

When the tank is fully cycled you're supposed to do a huge water change anyways because of the high level of Nitrates so you can vacuum it with the gravel vac then. I actually tried the flake method of cycling myself but couldn't get the ammonia past 1 ppm. But anyway the tank is in my bedroom and it smelled so bad after a while that I couldnt sleep at night! I ended up draining it and started over with comet goldfish.

As for scrubbing off scum from decorations you should do it in a bucket of tank water from when you do water changes because if you rinse it in untreated tap water the chlorine or chloramine will kill the bacteria.
Good luck!
