Cycling tank from existing tank

Well, it looks like I'll be setting up a 5-6 gallon tank for my dwarf puffers that may be starting to go after my other fish.

Using some existing water, gravel & filter squeezings from my established tank, how long would it take to cycle the new tank?

My main tank is an Eclipse 12 with biowheel, if I buy an Eclipse 5 can I use the biowheel from the 12 in the 5 to cycle it faster? My concern there would be initiating a mini cycle in the 12, which I don't want obviously. I think this is an option that I probably don't want to explore, but I figured I'd through it out there.

You are correct to think of seeding the filter media with the larger filter wheel, if it will fit (or just float it in the new tank for a few days). How long has the 12 been set up? If its well established, borrowing the wheel for a few days shouldn't hurt anything.

As for how long, that is entirely up to your tank. Every tank cycles differently and at a different rate. There is no way to predict this in advance, only to offer a generalized guess, which would be dependent on how much bacteria is transfered to the new tank, how much waste is in the new tank to feed it, and how much of it dies during transfer... there is no real way of knowing those things unless you are head of a science lab and have access to the proper equipment and were able to find a way to test enough of the water without disrupting it...

The best thing anyone can tell you is to track it with your test kits.

Thanks! The 12 has been up since November, so it should have a good colony built up.
