cycling with fish food

Hi,

I would like to start cycling my 2.5 gal aquarium (undergravel filter, heater) for my betta (lives in a 1.5 gal bowl for now). If I wanted to use fish food as ammonia source, how much should I add and how often? I have never cycled an aquarium before, so I have no feeling for how much would be ok, yet. The shrimp method sounds too strong for this small tank, I would guess.

Thanks for your help

Just use straight ammonia, simple and cheap...im sure you can't put all of it in, but you don't really need to worry too much about the amount.

Fish food could get expensive...not sure how much you'd have to use :/

-3x Angelfish
-5x Velvet Red Swordtail
-3x Albino Cory Cat
-3x Clown Loach
-3x Black Mollie
-1x Red Tailed Shark
-1x General Pleco
-1x Snail

10 Gallon

37 Gallon (Wanted)

Not Sure

150 Gallon (Wanted)

-5x Bala Shark
-2x Neon Blue Goarami
-5x Clown Loach
-1x Black Knife Ghost

I read, that it's sometimes difficult to find pure ammonia without perfume etc.. So, what should be listed as ingredient/s? Just ammonia?

I've honestly never cycled w/ pure ammonia :/ always with fish but i've heard it's much better. If you see Aunt Kymmie around, give her a personal message :) she's great.

Try This...

Just a small pinch a day, about the same amount you'd feed a small fish. Honestly, the shrimp method is the easiest as you don't have to remember to add anything to the tank. Just one small frozen shrimp to keep the cycle going is all you need. You can put it in a filter media bag or some pantyhose for easy removal once the tank is cycled.

Ok, finally I found pure Ammonia at the ACE store, but I haven't had a chance yet to start the whole thing. I think, I'm still in need of an eye dropper or something like that to get the ammonia out of the bottle. Fortunately Dali is hanging in there and Amelie is doing fine, so I hope I'll get it going soon.
If I'm not getting along with the ammonia, I'll definitely go with the shrimp method.

The ammonia method will work just fine. There's a bit of maintenance to it but nothing ridiculous.
