cycling 3 gallon tank?

Hi, I just bought a new three gallon aquarium for a Betta fish that I want to get soon. I am aware of cycling and know how it works so I would like to cycle the fishless way. Ayway, I bought a small internal filter with just a sponge and I'm wondering if I stick this in my established 18 gallon/65 litre tank for a week whether enough bacteria will grow to support the betta?

Thanks
X Lo

ok so I ended up moving the sponge from the internal filter into my HOB filter so I dont take up more power plug space and hopefully the sponge will grow some benificial bacteria :)

I have no personal experience with cycling a tank under 5 gallons. Just a word of caution, tanks under 5 gallons will not always hold a cycle. Have your test kit handy. Small tanks can be fine one day and crash the next.

+1 on Twistermom.

The quickest and safest way to cycle your 3g: Take the old sponge outta your existing HOB filter from your old tank wash it out in the newly set up 3g with its filter running. All the 'muck' you're putting in to the new tank this way is all beneficial bacteria right there for ya and done.
