Cycling a 112 gallon aquarium

Hello, i have just set up a new 112 gallon aquarium which was very clean when i set it up, but 2 days later i started to add about 2 large flakes of crushed fish food into the aquarium as a source of ammonia to start my cycle. After adding the fish food the water started to get alittle cloud is this nature and will it go away? I have done some research and i think it may be an algae bloom but i am not sure. If you have any comment on what this my be or how to get rid of it please post.

Hi Steenbergen. I'm afraid I can't help you as to why the water goes cloudy. What I can say though is that when I cycled my 35g (with fish food) the same thing happened. It went away in time though (think it took less than a week). Perhaps youres will take longer since it's a much larger tank, but I don't think it's anything to worry about.

Probably not an algae bloom, but a bacteria bloom -- good thing. Your tank will only support so many bacteria. If there are too many, some will die off, causing cloudy water. A flocculant will help clear the water, AquaKleer is an example. A water change will help some, but usually the cloudiness will come back after a few days. You may also want to try a product called StressZyme from API. This product contains good "bugs" and should also help your problem by introducing healthy "bugs" to your tank.
