Hey guys I am the new guy here but at the same time, I have been keeping fish for a few years, since I had a couple of kids, the fish kinda got the back burner for a while.
So I was wondering a few things that I couldn't find the answers to directly by reading previous posts so I thought I would ask:
-60 Gallon tank
-2 white tipped sharks(Catfish)
-3 Lamp Eye Tetras
-3 Glass Fish(Tetra)
-1 Pleco
-1 Weather Loach
-2 Gourami
Ok so:
1. They don't all look happy some clamped fins and some not so much activity.
They don't have any known or visual diseases, and ph checks out good along with Amonia, not a lot of Algae.
2. I have a powerhead but not an actual aeration type of thing like bubbles, could this be a problem for my tank?
I know you guys are already a great help, thanks for the reading time.;-)
Do you have a water test kit? What are your ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels?
What type filter are you using & what is you tank maintenance schedule?
If you are running a powerhead, along with a filter, then aeration would not be the problem.
What fish seem to be unhappy?
The catfish you have, are brackish fish and prefer higher salt levels as they age.
The weather loach is a cold water fish and prefers cooler temperatures. Although they do not need to be in groups, they are very interactive and playful in groups.
I know, lots of questions! Try to answer some of them and maybe we can find the root of the problem.
I don't really have a maintenance schedule but I try to syphon once a month and mainly the pleco and Loach. The others as far as I can tell are just not very active and I started to notice their fins not standing up like normal, I just thought that was a sign that someting is not right.
It would probably be better to keep fish that are used to the same temperatures right?
and what does it mean when they're brackish fish I've never known.
Do you think you could Help me piece this Aquarium together or should I start a new thread in a different forum area?
Can you buy an API liquid fresh water testing kit? .....or take some water to the fish store to be tested, most stores will test for free. Checking to make sure that the water is free of toxic ammonia and nitrites, would be a good place to start.
I do water changes of 25%-50% every week. You might find the fish to act more healthy if you start doing weekly water changes with a good gravel cleaning.
What temperature do you keep your tank? If its around 78 deg, I think the weather loach should be fine. My weather loach tank is 78 deg through the summer, even without a heater. Some say higher heats will shorten their life span.
Not sure what size your loach is, do you ever see any of the other fish picking on it? I could see my catfish mistaking them for a tasty worm.
Brackish water has marine salt. Brackish fish live in areas between fresh water and salt water. So, a lower level of salt than the ocean. I believe in the wild, the sharks go into freshwater to release their eggs. As the fry age, they move up stream to more salty waters.
