Welcome to the forum! There are a lot of good fish for a 55 gallon. Lots and lots of tetra and barbs. But to help us help you, we need a bit of information. We need to know how hard your tap water is and what the pH is. Not all fish can live in all water. They have specific needs. It's best to get fish whose needs fit your water. It's a lot less hassle.

Once you let us know the GH and KH--harness--and the pH we can make some suggestions for you!

Most of us don't know them, either. We have to look them up online. Usually a local water quality report will be able to tell you if you live in a city. If you have a well, it should be in your personal water quality report. Sometimes a good local pet store will be able to tell you (as they usually have equipment to test for these things).

Welcome to the Forum.

Once you have the info Izzy mentioned, you can browse our fish profiles for ideas. Second tab from the left in the blue bar across the top of the page. Data on minimum numbers (some fish are shoaling and need to be in a group), minimum tank size, compatibility, preffered water parameters, and other info is in each profile.

Something we all need to remember: The fish you've acquired was quite happy not being owned by you, minding its own business. If you’re going to take it under your wing then you’re responsible for it. Every aspect of its life is under your control, from water quality and temperature to swimming space. [Nathan Hill in PFK]
