I have a 55 gal tank and I am new to this. My water in the tank is turning cloudy and is developing a order. This fish have been in the tank for a week. Is it the food that is giving off the smell. Because the food does not smell well. Help
first off when did you get the tank, when did you get the fish, and what type of fish and how many do you have in there, also what type of filter do you have, it sounds like you put the fish in too soon to me, so i would do a 50% water change because I think you are getting an ammonia build up
You are experiencing bacterial bloom or ammonia spike as far as I know.
More fish in early stages of the tank=New Tank Syndrome
While food nearly doesn't smell, the decomposition of the food will, indicating you overfeed your fish. Don't feed the fish too generously.
Once a day feeding is better as this minimizes the risk of pollution. Imposing a one day fasting per week is also a good option.
Just out of curiosity do you have a water test kit? Specifically pH, ammonia, and Nitrite? If you don't take a sample into your LFS and have them test the water. This will help in determining exactly where in the cycling process you are, and may help in others being able to offer advice.
I might add a warning that a lot of lfs tend to give you a simple feedback of "The water is fine". Totally wrong and disastrous.
Insist to your lfs that the exact figures be written down.
What you need to test:
GH, KH, pH, nitrites, nitrates and ammonia
Yes blue that is very true.
One question: Is there sand in your tank? Instead of gravel?
When sand first gets put it, it takes a while for it to settle and it will cloud up the tank. Just another thought to think about. What color is the 'cloud' that you say?
