There are a couple of possibilities. The most obvious is that the tank is overstocked, and although it has worked just fine so far, as these fish begin to grow and mature, they will produce more waste. Combine this delicate balance with some overfeeding while you were on vacation, and you probably just had a bacteria bloom.
Another option would be related to the cleaning of the filter. A lot of people clean their filters just before leaving town to make sure everything is "read to go" with the tank. Unfortunately, if they clean all stages of the filter, including the sponge filter, they are often harming a large supply of beneficial bacteria. This again could lead to the cloudy water situation.
I'm glad to hear things are settling down. Most often it is just a matter of patience. I would, however, strongly suggest that you thin that tank down. I would personally begin by removing the Tiger Barbs.
