I haven't seen any treated polyester fiber used for pillows, but just read the label - anything treated with chemicals must be so labeled as it's the law.

What I did is rather than putting a sponge in the top part, I put a sponge around the intake tube. It allows it to be fry safe for my live bearers, allows a great place for bacteria to go, and keeps it really clear. Just squeez out the sponge in some tank water every few weeks.
