Cleaning a used aquarium

Hi everyone I am a newbie and looking for some advice....I've had tanks before with great sucess but I recently bought a used tank off of craigs list. It came with some great decorations and things and I'm wondering what is the best way to clean the inside of the tank and the decor without using something that could harm the fishies that I will have in there someday. I am going to have an all goldfish tank once I get this baby up, running and cycled and all that good stuff....any ideas would be greatly appreciated, thanks!!

Hot water and a good scrub should be all it needs. If you feel you need something more then vinegar or a mild bleach would be OK, but make sure you rinse it very thoroughly before using it.

Welcome to the forum. :)

I, too, use the "I smell like a pickle" method.

Hi and thanks for the replies, this may sound dumb but if I just use water and whoever had this tank before had some diseased fish like Ich or something, is it possible that it could still be in there and just be dormant? I dont know im just worred....Its a 20 gallon. Thanks everyone!!!

No worries with Ich. That needs a host. Not sure about some other things though.

Use diluted bleach, rinse, repeat a couple of times. Rinse until you can't smell the bleach. Then let it air dry for a couple of days and you should be good to go.

A 20 gallon is actually too small for a goldfish, since given the space they normally get huge. Maybe use it for a tropical tank?

20g is much too small for goldfish, even just one. I too would make it a tropical tank and got for some small tetras, pygmy cories perhaps, kuhlies, rasboras etc etc.
