That's how I do it as well. Then after I have sucked up all the poop,etc, I take either a plastic fork or my fingers and sift through the sand to make sure there are no air pockets or dead areas where gases or air could collect. Some say that unless sand is three inches deep or deeper, that it's not necessary but I don't chance it.
