Cleaning my sponge filter

Hagen Aquarium or Bowl Sponge Filter and Carbon Inserts Unit

Above is the filter I have in my 10. It does a great job removing debris, but I always make a mess while cleaning it. When i pull it out of the water, all the water still in it pours back into the tank, along with all the debris.I have tried having a cup near buy and moving the filter quickly over the cup but i don't have enough hands. Any tricks of the trade? Ill also but another sponge if someone does not have this issue.

You might want to look into looking locally for one of these. They are extremely easily to clean and work very well.

put cup bowl in tank and take the whole filter out in that should catch most the crud coming off of it, other wise hit it with the gravel vac when you are cleaning you tank to get most of the lose stuff off first.
