No, do not do a deep clean of your filter as this is where the majority of your beneficial bacteria lives. Just swish the filter cartridge in used tank water. If the flow is inhibited by gunk in the filter itself take the filter off the tank and also swish it in a bucket of used tank water to knock off any large chunks of algae. I have one tank that the filter seems to really gunk up at the outflow area and occasionally I will do a quick swipe of that area with a paper towel. But I try not to mess too much with the filter itself. What kind of filter is it?
Ten 4 that is what I was thinking! I have an Emperor 400 I do believe that it is. Just saw that inside it was kinda nasty and wanted to make sure that it should/shouldn't be like that! THANKS!
