A clean slate...

Hi folks, i've been lucky enough to get my hands on some slabs of Green Borrowdale Slate from a slate mine in the Lake District in the UK. It's a really pretty rock and I think it'd look really nice in my new tank i'm setting up. However, it's been out in all weathers for years (probably a couple of hundred to be honest) and may well have been in a river or pond at some point. My question therefore is whether i need to sterilise it before i put it in, or just clean it thouroughly or what. i know it's definitely slate so it won't mess with the hardness/ph etc, but i'm worried about putting some nice new fishes in there and them all catching some horrible disease or falling foul of some poisoning. Can i use it or is it just not gonna happen? Thanks folks!

Just had a minor pothole on the road to progress, the bloke at the slate mine wouldn't let me have the slate, cos they've just started selling offcuts as chipping and garden ornaments, so i went and got some from in the hills where it just lies about in rivers and on scree slopes! This stuff i've got now is from a river, so how good a scrub do i need? do i need to get all traces of any foreign matter out of every tiny crack, or can i give it a good scrub with a stiff scrubbing brush, and just put it in boiling water to sterilize it.

It's a really nice deep green colour and i'm really pleased wth it, but i'm never walking 4 miles with 45 litre rucksack full of slate again!!!
