I changed out my Blk. sand in my 6 gal. kitchen tank to pool filter sand. I had a trio of male fancy guppies and I could not see the black moscow very good against the black sand. I decided to change it out today to brighten the tank.

I have a before picture and a new picture with the pool filter sand. It looks so much brighter. I put a black type of contact paper as the background. I have this tank next to a window in my kitchen and the algae won't show up much with the darker background. I also added a retaining wall on the right side made with the black slate I had . I put Crypt, tied Java Moss on the black slate stones with Java Ferns, I also have Anacharis and Val as plants in that tank. I put 2 Assassin snails in the tank also.

Tell me what you think.

It's amazing how you can change the look of a aquarium just by switching colors and plants around or going from gravel to sand. Even going from Plastic plants to live plants a big difference. I used to have all plastic plants in all my tanks but switched to all low light plants. I like it alot better now then before. The black background still shows off the plants over a design type of background. I can see my black guppy alot better also.

Can you get a better picture of the sand, not so blurry. It looks like the grains are a lot bigger then my play sand. Ive been thinking of switching do to the playsand seems to compact easier

The pool filter sand is alot courser then play sand not like a powder sand. Costs a bit more but not much at $11.99 for a 50lb bag at a pool supply company. I like it as If algae gets on top I just rub the sections between my hands and it comes clean, Here is another picture. This is from my 55 gal. tank.I'm not sure if it will come in clearer as I have a Kodak Easy Share and the pictures sometimes does not come out good.
