When I need to net fish I tend to take it really slow, and it seems like it works okay. It keeps from stressing the fish out too much at least I think.

Generally, I put the net in the tank and just leave it there for a bit to let them get used to it. Eventually they come over to inspect it and then just go about their own business, so I start moving it around slowly. Again, they get a bit startled, but once they get used to it they calm down a bit. Sometimes you get lucky and one will actually swim into the net, at which point you just gently scoop him up and move him.

If you have two nets it's a bit easier seeing you can hold one in place and use the other to gently "herd" the fish into it.

That's just what works for me though. Different species have different methods that work for them I'm sure.

Some times I have to end up using two nets. One i will use to kinda herd the fish to the other side of the tank where I have the other net and them scoop them up. Another way is just being patient and sticking the net into the tank and holding it still. Then when the fish comes close scoop them up.

Cut a two liter bottle in half and stick the top with bottle neck down inside the base cut the neck so the fish will fit if you have to and stick it in the water. This will make a one way trap. Just stick it in and use the net to nudge this fish in the right direction.

+1 using this method. I did the same when trying to catch some Zebra Danios. It also helps to bait the trap with food instead of stressing them out and chasing them around . If you need it raised off the bottom or want to suspend it a bit, just tie some string to it and the other end around the lid.

As long as you are patient (since it can take a while) and place it about the same height they normaly swim, you'll get em. When catching more than one, I would just transfer them to a fry net as I got em one at a time. Just Google 2 liter fish trap and you will find tons of examples.

It's easy to catch fish when you remove the water. Also, using a large net will make it easier.

Not a usefull method on day 1, but foolproof by day 3....

At feeding time, place flakes in the net, then net in the tank. By day 3, the fish will jump in the net for you.
