Cardinal Stocking

Today I was planning on upping my Cardinal Shoal from 8 to 12, only to come home and find a dead Cardinal. I immediately removed the fish and checked my water. Ammonia 0, Nitrites 0, Nitrates less than 10 and pH 6.8. I decided not to buy more fish until I got some insight. My current stock is as follows:

8 Cherry Barbs
8 Odessa Barbs
7 Cardinal Tetra
4 Panda Cory
2 Sterbai Cory
1 Bristlenose
1 Dwarf Powder Blue Gourami

About two weeks ago when I added 10 Cardinals I watched a Dwarf Gourami kill 2 Cardinals (I had 2 dwarfs at the time). So, I removed 1 Dwarf and the aggression seemed to stop. I have had no issues since then. What do you think is the problem?

I am assuming the dwarf powder blue gourami is still in this tank? As you noted with the other gourami, this fish can be the problem. Monitor its behaviour (sit in front of the tank quietly for some time) to see if it is aggressive; as noted in our profile of this species, brightly coloured fish can bring out increased aggression in the dwarf gourami.

No mention is made of the tank size or aquascaping, so I'll assume there is not a space issue (Odessa barb are active swimmers and need room for example). Cardinal tetra are just the opposite in terms of activeness, they are sedate fish that prefer quiet surroundings and lots of plants; they have a phobia of light, so the tank should always be dimly lit as with floating plants. Bright light will stress them, and stress weakens the immune system which means all sorts of other issues may occur. Check the profile on this species too.

Fish profiles are second tab from the left in the blue bar across the top, or click on the fish's name if it is shaded in posts.

Something we all need to remember: The fish you've acquired was quite happy not being owned by you, minding its own business. If you’re going to take it under your wing then you’re responsible for it. Every aspect of its life is under your control, from water quality and temperature to swimming space. [Nathan Hill in PFK]
