I use carbon ONLY to filter meds or other additives that treat the tank. If you use carbon to filter, you will need to change it regularly. Monthly, is a rule o fthumb as it becomes "contaminated" and ceases to filter out impurities. It can still function as a bio-bed but is not necessary if all is well in the tank.
